The event which took place on Saturday, 5th February 2022 at Meena Event Centre, Lodge Road Kano, started with a World Cancer Day Walk around Nassarawa GRA at around 8am in the morning; indeed a large turnout of women was recorded despite the cold morning temperature in Kano.
However, on returning from the walk, the main event commences with a welcome address by Rahana Kakudi; she appreciates all the participants for sparing their time to witness the event; she mentioned the brief history of the organization as well as the purpose of organizing the event is to join the World in celebrating 2022 World Cancer Day, which was Friday 4th February, 2022 and also to create more and more awareness to individuals especially young women. Rahana concluded by informing the participants that there will be free Cancer Screening during the event for interested persons.
Furthermore, Dr. Adama Jibril makes a presentation about healthy living; she mentioned that prevention is far better than cure, she urges that at first people needs to seriously observe what they eat and try to balance it if possible and also drink a lot of water at least 3.5 – 4 Liters a day. Dr. Adama also advises the participants to regularly eat fruits and do some exercise.
Dr. Bashir Yanusa, a consultant from Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, in his presentation about Breast Cancer, he talked extensively about the history of Cancer, what causes it, what are the symptoms and possible medication. Dr. Bashir stress more about the women that have high risks of getting cancer; i.e those that didn’t got married in time; those that don’t breast feed their babies and the rest.
The Chairman, Kano Civil Society Forum Alh. Ibrahim Wayya in his goodwill message congratulates SALCASUN for a successful event; he promise to link the organization with more philanthropist for more donations for this noble cause; equally, a representative from Community Health Research Initiative (CHR) Sulaiman Jalo mentioned about the activities of Cancer Foundation which they establish in collaboration with SALCASUN were they help less privilege cancer patients.
Consequently, Dr. Maryam Sa’id Auwal a Gynecologist from Abdullahi Wase Hospital, Kano talked about Cervical Cancer; its origin, what causes it, the symptoms; she added that cervical cancer is detectable, preventable and treatable; Dr. Maryam further urge women to go for screening every 3 years and women should always go to the hospitals when they experience ices in their private part. The event was concluded with presentation of award to contributors and well-wishers of the organization like Dr. Aminu Garbab Magashi and others
